I am confident the team will still be bottom-of-the-barrel even after our 3-peat next season

Still don't understand why teams don't trade a conditional 5th or 6th for the rights to a college player clearly heading in free agent direction. If on August 1st when everyone knew butcher wasn't signing with the avs why not give them that and have 2 weeks to work out a deal before 10 other teams get in on the action too!? If a deal gets done you give up a 6th round for clearly something worth way more than a 6th round pick and the avs get something rather then nothing. If no deal then you lose nothing and you compete with 10 other teams for him. At the very minimum it shows the player and agent you are serious about wanting him on your squad.

As much as I despise everything Pittsburgh, I would GLADLY take the worst farm system in the NHL for consecutive cups.

Yeah, that Reaves trade is really a head scratcher. They really could've used that 1st.

eh. We essentially fell 20 draft spots - I'm guessing JR and co. didn't see anyone they liked (except us who were hoping for Timmins). The head scratcher was the loss of Sundqvist

Timmins, Hague or Samberg could've been good pickups to fill up your D prospect pool. At least you got Lauzon, think the Habs were hoping to pick him a couple of picks later.

So Zach Aston Reese isn't even a top 100 prospect? I find that hard to believe being how many teams were trying to sign him. Also had 8 points in his 10 games played in Wilkes Barre. Penguins are talking about him like he may make the team this year. No way he isn't top 100.

Trading the 1st is only a question on whether pronman is right to rank kostin as the 24th best prospect (Despite the fact he wasn't drafted till 31 meaning a lot of teams disagreed...and the prospect list includes guys from 3-4 drafts). Realistic based on how teams valued kostin and the fact he was the last 1st round pick means teams think he's closer to the 80th best prospect than the 24th.

Long-term analytics show that the difference between the last 1st round pick we gave up and the 2nd round pick we got in return is negliible. The only question is whether we made the right selection and whether kostin was extremely misvalued by the 10-15 teams drafting before us.

I for one would trade both Cups to be recognized at the top by ESPN in their prospect evaluations!!!

ESPN SUCKS. And it REALLY sucks when it comes to hockey.

ESPN hockey coverage does suck, but that doesn't mean Corey Pronman doesn't know what he is doing or talking about any more or less than someone else. You may or may not agree with him, but it isn't as if he is inherently wrong because he works for ESPN.

Isn't Jarry potentially a high-end prospect? And the other goalie down there projects highly as well, as I remember. Plus there's ZAR. Didn't WBS make the playoffs despite a ton of injuries?

These idiots keep ranking us at the bottom of these lists and our prospects keep helping our team win every year. Yes the Reeves trade is a complete disaster. Kostin could have helped bridge the gap. I think he will end up being a top 5 player from this draft. I also think Jarry and Gustavson will be better than just about any goalie on this list. Remember that these lists never included Matt Murray until he lit up the AHL his rookie year there. They never included Brian Dumoulin who is a first pairing shutdown dman with 2 cup rings. They never included Jake Guentzel, Connor Sheary, and Brian Rust who will score at least 75 goals combined in the upcoming season. So they mean nothing. It's really easy to cherry pick the players with the most points in their respective junior leagues and compile a list of who SHOULD be a good player at this level. Its a lot harder to actually accurately pick who will succeed and who will not. Winning the prospect list doesnt equal this [url]

Did RW really just base a whole blog around an ESPN writer/article?

ESPN.....riiiiight. They ranked the Pens 30th two years ago...the year the WB 5 (prospects) came alive and the Cup was hoisted that year...

ESPN are not to be considered when looking for insightful information about the NHL.

WBS finished first in their division despite not having a big name on their team. They had good goaltending and played great team defense. This year they have a pretty strong defense and some new forward prospects that came from college that we dont know what they are yet like Tiffels and Adam Johnson. I think DiPauli will surprise if he remains healthy as well.
